What Are Dunnage Bags

What are Dunnage Airbags?

-Dunnage airbags are air-filled pouches that secure and protect cargo during transportation. They are used to fill empty spaces between cargo, such as when loading pallets into a trailer, and can be used in trucks, railcars, and overseas containers.

What are airbags used for?

-Dunnage airbags, are high-pressure devices used to fill gaps and brace cargo in containers. They prevent movement, absorb shock, and minimize vibrations, ensuring stable and secure transit.

What are the benefits of using dunnage air bags?

-They provide exceptional load stability, minimizing shipping damage. Durable and reusable, they resist load shifting and withstand high pressure, offering a cost-effective way to protect your products.

What are dunnage bags made of?

-Outer Material – Woven Polypropylene

-Inner Material – Co-Extruded Polyethylene

Are dunnage bags recyclable?

Yes- All Cargo Tuff dunnage airbags are 100% recyclable.

Can you re-use dunnage bags?

-Yes. Our level 1 airbags are rated to be re-used up to 6 times. Cargotuff has created an app where you can scan the dunnage air bags individual QR code to track if the airbag can be reused or is ready for recycling.

How to choose the right size of dunnage bags for your cargo?

-The appropriate air bag size is based on the type of transportation mode, product weight, cargo type and the void space between your cargo and the container walls. To ensure a proper fit, measure these gaps accurately and select an air bag that fully fills the space when inflated. Mihi Logistics provides free on-site assessments to recommend the best air bag sizes for your cargo needs.

Can Cargotuff air bags withstand sharp products and objects?

-Yes, they can withstand significant pressure, resist load shifting, and are reusable, making them a cost-effective investment to safeguard your products.

Can I use dunnage bags at the trailer doors?

-While using dunnage bags to fill the void at the end of a trailer (between your cargo and the doors) is common, it’s not recommended from a load-restraint perspective. This is primarily because dunnage bags are generally not rated to withstand the full force of a significant load shift during transit. To secure a large gap at the trailer doors, we recommend utilizing e-track ratchet straps.

Are there different types of dunnage bags?

-Yes, various types of dunnage airbags are designed for specific applications. They come in a variety of sizes to accommodate a range of void spaces within a container.WE proudly offer Cargotuff 4Trans and Level 1 dunnage air bags.

What are dunnage airbags rated to?

-We proudly supply CargoTuff airbags, which are rated as ‘Level 1 through 5’ by the Association of American Railroads (AAR). This certification reflects the highest industry standards for dunnage airbags, ensuring superior performance and reliability across various load capacities and transportation modes, including rail, road, and sea.

How much weight can you secure with a dunnage airbag?

-4Transair bags have been Independently certified for cargo securement and void filler applications in lateral voids to secure pallets of product that weigh up to 2,400lbs.

-Level 1 air bags are AAR (Association of American Railroads) verified dunnage airbags, and are designed to handle cargo weights up to 44,000 lbs.

How are dunnage airbags inflated?

-Mihi Logistics offers a quick and efficient solution for inflating dunnage airbags with the Portable Air Master (PAM), a battery-powered inflation unit. This device ensures fast and hassle-free inflation for your container airbags.

How often does the PAM battery need to be charged?

-the PAM (Portable Air Master) inflates an average of 80-90 Cargotuff airbags between charging?

Can you burst the bags using the PAM?

-No, the Portable Air Master (PAM) is designed to prevent over-inflation and inflates airbags to a set output pressure of 1.2 PSI. It operates with a maximum airbag pressure of 2.6 PSI and a minimum burst pressure of 8 PSI. CargoTuff airbags have a safety factor greater than 3:1 (burst pressure to operating pressure), ensuring durability.

– 4Trans Airbags: OTR (Level 0): Minimum burst pressure of 6 PSI; maximum operating pressure of 2 PSI.

– Level 1 (AAR Verified): Minimum burst pressure of 8 PSI; maximum operating pressure of 2.6 PSI.

Can I get custom dunnage airbags?

-Yes, depending on minimum volume requirements and your specific needs, there may be instances where a uniquely shaped product or a large void requires a custom-manufactured dunnage bag. The expert team at Mihi Logistics is ready to assist you, regardless of the void you need to address.

And when it comes to how you’re shipping your products, you’ll need to consider what type of dunnage air bag is needed for each mode of transportation?

  • For truck shipment, you will need a 2 ply bag.
  • For intermodal (piggyback) shipment, you will need a 2 ply level 1 bag.
  • For sea container, you will need level 1 or level 2 bag.
  • For rail car shipment: Depending on the load of the products transported, you will need level 2, Level 3, level 4 or level 5 bag.
  • For vessel shipment: Depending on the cargo configuration, you will use Level 3, level 4 or level 5 bags.

Air bag benefits-

While alternative bracing technologies exist, they are often less effective, more expensive, and less environmentally friendly than dunnage bags. Many alternatives are single-use, generating significant waste and higher costs.

Level 1 CargoTuff dunnage air bags are reusable, and CargoTuff has developed an app to track their lifespan, ensuring maximum utility. Mihi Logistics also offers CargoTuff’s newer 4Trans airbags, which are reusable, recyclable, and available at a slightly lower price point, making them an ideal choice if recycling isn’t an option.

Woven dunnage bags, such as those made from durable polypropylene, are a sustainable choice with a longer lifespan and greater reusability than paper options. Their resilience reduces waste, minimizes raw material usage, and supports a circular economy through repeated use. Unlike paper dunnage bags, which require a plastic lining for airtightness and are harder to recycle, woven bags are stronger, easier to reuse, and more eco-friendly. Filled with air, an abundant and harmless resource, woven dunnage bags are a reliable and sustainable cargo-securing solution.

Air bag resilience-

Mihi Logistics, a premier seller of CargoTuff dunnage air pillows, offers bags crafted from tough woven polypropylene, ensuring exceptional strength and durability. This material provides a long lifespan, is reusable, and recyclable at the end of its use. Compared to paper dunnage bags, woven polypropylene delivers superior resistance to tearing, weathering, and caustic chemicals. It also offers outstanding moisture resistance, protecting cargo from humidity and dampness during transit while extending the bag’s usability.

The flexibility and elasticity of woven dunnage bags allow for better surface contact, enhancing cargo restraint and packing efficiency. These robust and reliable bags maintain their structural integrity even in demanding conditions, making them the ideal choice for secure and stable shipments.

Dunnage bag risks

Dunnage bags are generally very safe to use in the logistics industry, posing minimal risks to personnel or cargo. The primary concern is the potential for a bag to rupture during inflation, which could cause injury to nearby personnel. However, this risk is significantly reduced with woven dunnage bags, as they are engineered to withstand thousands of pounds of pressure and manufactured to the highest quality standards.

To ensure safe inflation, the Portable Air Master (PAM) is calibrated to inflate bags to 1.6 PSI, well below the maximum operating pressure of 2-2.6 PSI. With a burst point of 6-8 PSI, these bags have a substantial safety margin, further reducing the likelihood of rupture.

Paper dunnage bags, in contrast, are more prone to tears and ruptures, making them a less reliable and less safe option overall.

Our manufacturer, CargoTuff, rigorously tests 3% of its woven polypropylene dunnage bags to ensure consistent quality and safety. In the rare case of a quality issue, CargoTuff can trace it back through every stage of production, from raw materials to the final product, ensuring the highest level of reliability for our customers.
